Nikah & Civil Marriage Procedure

By the grace of Allah, the Aylmer Mosque has been authorized to perform and register Muslim marriages in the province of Quebec. The marriages are in accordance with Islamic laws and are regulated by the Director of Civil Status. In other words, we perform Islamic and civil marriages together.

The parties involved who wish to get married must follow the following steps:

Preparation of documents

- Identification documents
- Photocopies of birth certificates or acts of birth
- In case of divorce :
Photocopy of the certificate of divorce or absolute decree of divorce
(for a divorce between 1968 and June 1, 1986)
- In case of death of previous spouse:
Photocopy of the act of death or the certificate of death
- In case of a cancelled marriage:
Photocopy of the judgment annulling the marriage
- In case spouses are minors:
Photocopy of the judgment authorizing the marriag
- Additional documents may be required

Opening the file

- Complete and sign the Marriage Publication form
Complete this form only after you have all your documents.

- Call to make an appointment with the officiant

- Meet with the officiant to verify the documents and open the file.
- Choose the date and location of the wedding
- Complete the publication of the marriage notice
- Publication of the marriage notice 21 DAYS before the ceremony.
(Failure to meet this requirement will result in a delay of the ceremony).

Note: 1 witness will be needed to verify the information provided.

- Pay the fees: 300$ when the marriage is celebrated in person at the mosque, 450$ when Imam travels within 1 hour from the mosque. Fees are payable to the mosque of Aylmer.

Day of the ceremony

- Reading of the articles of the Civil Code of Quebec.
- Completion and signing of the Declaration of Marriage.
- Nikah (Islamic marriage).
- 2 witnesses are required to sign the declaration of marriage and attend the Nikah.
- A copy of the declaration is given to the couple.

- The officiant declares the marriage to the Director of état civil of Quebec.
- The Director sends a letter confirming receipt of the declaration to the address indicated on the declaration.
- The Director registers the couple’s marriage certificate.
